Barry Fry has reminded Birmingham City what happened the last time they were relegated to League One - he led them to a league and cup double.

Blues secured the league title and won the EFL Trophy – called the Auto Windscreens Shield at the time – at Wembley in front of 78,000 fans. Fry, now 79 but still involved in football as the director of football at League One side Peterborough United, believes Blues can do it again.

He said: “I know all you Bluenoses are down and out at the minute because of the relegation. I must remind you, when I was there and we got relegated to League One, the following year we won the league. We also won the the Auto Windscreens at Wembley in front of 78,000 people, 55,000 Bluenoses.

“You can do the double next year. The club has never been in better hands than the new owners. They are going to get you back to the promised land of the Premier League.”

Fry remains a popular figure in these parts and will return to Birmingham on Friday night for BluesFest. Fry will join Christophe Dugarry at Millennium Point to regale stories from their Blues careers.

The duo will then go head-to-head as managers of two teams at St Andrew’s on Saturday in aid of the Birmingham City Foundation. You can purchase tickets for the match here.
