Izzy Christiansen has missed out on a place in the England Women’s World Cup squad after losing her battle to recover from an ankle injury.

The Lyon midfielder has become an established part of Phil Neville's side but underwent surgery after injuring herself in the 3-0 victory over Japan that ensured England won the SheBelieves Cup in March.

Neville ultimately opted against selecting Christiansen, with Birmingham's Lucy Staniforth getting the nod instead.

Otherwise, there were few surprises in the England squad, which was gradually released via social media over the course of Wednesday morning by a series of celebrities and ex-footballers.

Steph Houghton was the first to be confirmed as England captain for this summer's tournament in France by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.
