WHAT HAPPENED

A last-gasp stunner from Emma Mitchell guided us to a 1-0 victory over Manchester City on the final day of the Women’s Super League season.

It was the perfect way to conclude our title-winning campaign - and as an added bonus, it also stopped the visitors from completing an unbeaten domestic season.

Playing in front of a sell-out crowd, we made a promising start, with Leah Williamson of all players at the heart of every attacking move.

The 22-year-old defender first sent Beth Mead through on goal with an inch-perfect pass, but she was unable to convert, before twice heading wide from dangerous positions inside the six-yard box.

Kim Little then went on to force Ellie Roebuck into a difficult save from close range - and the remainder of the first-half followed a similar narrative.

Dominique Bloodworth, Katie McCabe and Vivianne Miedema all had golden opportunities to open the scoring before the break, but they were somehow denied by the City keeper.

We should have been ahead at the break - and for the remainder of the game, it looked like we’d be left to rue our missed first-half chances.

That was until Mitchell stepped up in the 88th minute with a guaranteed goal of the season contender.

Having been on the pitch for less than 10 minutes, Mitchell took a touch on the edge of the box, evaded her marker and found the top left corner with a stunning left-footed strike.

We’ve scored 70 goals in the WSL this season - and that was right up there as one of the best.
