Simon Jordan has laughed off the notion that Birmingham City will be a ‘cup final’ for League One teams after their relegation to the third tier.

The talkSPORT pundit, formerly the owner of Crystal Palace, has been outspoken in his criticism of Blues owners Knighthead for their decision to fire John Eustace and appoint Wayne Rooney in October. And in a conversation with Blues fan and talkSPORT reporter Ian Danter, Jordan disagreed with the idea that Blues will be the third tier’s cup final next season.

Danter said: “League One as a division is far, far tougher than it was in the mid-90s (when Blues last played in it) and Birmingham will be everybody’s cup final, to a certain extent, next season.”

Jordan replied: “Leave off, no they’re not. I don’t subscribe to the view that everybody in League One is saying, ‘My cup final is Birmingham’.”

Other than Derby County, who have secured promotion back to the Championship at the second time of asking, Blues’ 2023/24 average attendance of 21,180 is bigger than all of the clubs in last season’s League One.

Jordan added: “The reason why I was saying about the inevitability of this is because this is the one time in the most recent times of Birmingham City – a club I’m heavily invested in – that they probably had more clarity and solidity in their ownership. They didn’t have the Carson Yeungs and God knows who else of the world.”
