Birmingham City owners Knighthead confirm another purchase with Sports Quarter in mind
Birmingham City owners Knighthead have now purchased a stake in two other Birmingham-based sports teams
Knighthead Capital Management continues to hoover up investment opportunities in Birmingham with the purchase of ‘a significant ownership stake’ in netball team, Birmingham Panthers.
The Birmingham City owners recently acquired a 49 percent slice of Birmingham Phoenix, a cricket side which competes in The Hundred, for around £40million.
Knighthead are headed up by Blues chairman Tom Wagner and have pledged to build a Sports Quarter in the heart of the Second City. Wagner’s vision for the Sports Quarter includes a state-of-the-art stadium, training facilities for all of Blues’ teams, offices, entertainment spaces and restaurants.
The Sports Quarter will create thousands of jobs for local people and could host sports other than football.
The Panthers are a new entrant into the 2025 Netball Super League, which has broadcast partnerships with the BBC and Sky Sports, and Wagner is pleased to diversify his sports portfolio.
“Our operations in Birmingham and the West Midlands are guided by the core principle that sport has a unique ability to bring people together,” said Wagner.
“Netball is a sport on the rise and adding it to our portfolio is another step towards our ultimate ambition, a Sports Quarter that will promote investment and create jobs, growth and opportunities at an unprecedented scale in East Birmingham.”
Alison Kay, co-founder of the Birmingham Panthers, added: "We are absolutely thrilled to have Knighthead's support and belief in the Birmingham Panthers.
“This partnership marks a significant step forward, not only for our club but for the growth of netball as a whole. Their support will allow us to strengthen our foundations, expand our reach, and inspire the next generation of players and fans. It’s an exciting time for the sport, and we’re eager to see the impact this collaboration will have on both our team and the wider netball community.”
