Mikel San Jose has told Manchester United to ‘learn to respect’ after their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The former Birmingham City midfielder attended the final at San Mames, where he played for 10 years for Athletic Bilbao, and took joy from United’s demise after they dumped his former side out in the semi-finals.

Brennan Johnson scored the only goal of the game as Spurs ended their 17-year wait for a trophy and heaped misery on beleaguered United boss Ruben Amorim.

Posting on his X account afterwards, San Jose – who spent three years on Liverpool’s books before returning to Bilbao in his early twenties – said: “Fifteen days ago you were laughing. Today you are crying.

“All the Athletic Club fans had respect for you while you laughed at us. We still have respect (for) you in our city and in our Stadium tonight.

“But you deserve to lose Manchester United, I hope at least you learn to respect.”

San Jose spent the vast majority of his career with the Basque club and joined Blues for a year after leaving them in 2020. The midfielder only played 28 games for Blues but still follows the club’s fortunes.

He recently attended Blues’ Vertu Trophy final against Peterborough United at Wembley.
