The new EFL Championship Squad Cost Rules (SCR) changes the entire transfer landscape for clubs like Birmingham City. Under the new SCR framework, Championship teams are strictly capped at spending 85% of their total revenue on first-team squad costs—including player wages, agent fees, and transfer fee amortisation. Crucially, academy players are completely excluded from this squad cost numerator, making home-grown talent a massive, rule-exempt financial loophole. While loaning in young players from the Premier League used to be a cheap way to inject top-tier quality, the new regulations mean loan fees and contributing to parent-club wages now count directly against that 85% revenue cap whilst at the same time develop the player asset value for the parent club. In this podcast, we break down why relying on loan players could financially suffocate the Blues, and why aggressively developing and promoting young academy stars is no longer just a philosophy—it is vital to future sustainability and growth of the club.

Is the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) framework officially dead? We explain how the newly implemented 85% squad spending cap—which limits club expenditures on transfer fees, player wages, manager salaries, and agent fees to 85% of total revenue—will completely rewrite the Birmingham City transfer strategy and alter their trajectory in the transfer window.
